Ever Forward: The Year End Reflection

2015, has been quite a year.   We have seen a lot of change and a lot of growth.  On the blog, the
Podcast and in the community in general.  I have actually been pretty deep in thought about a lot of things as the year comes to a close, about my personal life and the community at large.

We saw lots of releases this past year.  Planetfall helix's, New ships and the big release of Halo.  Spartan Games made Planetfall at their first North American convention.  They came to the mother of all games conventions Gencon.  I think this exposure was really good as there are rumblings of more things to come in the coming new year.  More shows and better community support.  Hell, just in the past 5 months Spartan has really overhauled the vanguard program and made it better.  I happen to know that more changes are on the way and they are exciting to say the least.

We saw big growth in the Firebase Delta Podcast.  We have been on hiatus the past month or so, but will be returning strong in 2016.  The technical issues have been fixed or are in process of getting fixed.  We will be back and stronger than ever, bringing you coverage of your favorite Spartan Games.  The blog has been at a good spot, but I want to grow it.  Some new faces will be around, making posts in 2016.  We will be expanding coverage to other games.  I will be able to focus on FSA, Planetfall and some Halo.  I am also hoping this means I will have more content.  I plan on doing at least one post a week on the same day every week.

Adepticon 2015 was a great success and the support from the community was awesome.  Our first year there has lead to a second with growth.  Our endeavor known as The Schaumburg Prime Offensive has grown quite a bit we gained some space and are now up to 32 players from 24.  We also added the Planetfall tournament to the mix this year, which sold out quick and now has added space.

I joined the FSA Playtest and have been helping shape the game for the future.  The rest of the guys are helping improve Planetfall and so far have been slowly bringing the game around.  I am looking forward in the coming year to all the FSA and Planetfall stuff that is coming out.

Well it's been one hell of a year and I am glad it is now behind me.  There was a lot of change, some of it bad, but most of it was good.  The benefits shall be reaped in the coming year.  2016 should prove to be as interesting as 2015.  There are things brewing and the anticipation is killing me.

Halo Gets Big: New Carriers!

SeerK here with a quick update.  Halo sees its next release, this time we are getting the big boys.  The Assault carriers are now available for your fleet.  Phil over at Firebase Delta was nice enough to get some pictures up over at the Facebook page.  The new ships look great and seem to be resin, which is a departure from the current Halo products.

So enjoy the Pics!

Building A Better Community: The Cheerleader

A couple months back I wrote about building a better game community.  I kind of touched on come different ways and things that needed to be in place to help sustain a community after you built it up.  I wanted to expand on one particular topic, one that is probably the most important and possibly the most dubious position to hold.  That is the roll of the community "Cheerleader".

Do You PanO? SeerK Talks Infinity

Greetings all.  As you know I have been pulling double duty in my gaming.  I am going hard in Firestorm Armada as always, but I have also been going hard into INfinity as of late.  I am up to two armies of a pretty good size.  I have my Panoceania and my Haqqislam.  I am doing "Vanilla" PanO along with two sectorials.  NCA, Neo-Terra Capitaline, and Military Orders.  My Haq army is actually made up of two sectorials that I can run as Vanilla.  I started with the Hassassin Bharain and just bought a Qapu Khalki or QK army.

I know I know, I have a Planetfall army for some ground combat, but the local group seems a little disinterested with Planetfall in its current form.  Spellduckwrong and Dreadbeard have been branching off into Warpath in addition to Firestorm.  I have always had mixed feeling with Mantic games so I threw in with Infinity.  The store I work at in Battle Creek actually has an ITS league going with 18 people in it.  The local scene is growing quick as well, with play groups in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Wixom and the Detroit area.

Adepticon 2016 Registration is Nigh!

The Marriott Schaumburg Renaissance Hotel
Wow this month has flown by.  I just realized I had not posted anything for most of the month.  We have been having some technical difficulties with the Podcast website and I have been in a frenzy of running events at the store, in addition to doing some projects I have been putting off.

So we will just consider the hiatus over and get back to posting.  We will be back to recording episodes of Firebase Delta as soon as we get a new site up and get all the gremlins hammered out.  We are still diligently working on material and plotting our trip to Adepticon 2016.  Dreadbeard, Spellduckwrong and myself are getting the missions all hammered out for the Schaumburg Prime Offensive and the Schaumburg Beach Head.  We are going to try and have the primer missions posted in a couple weeks to make sure everybody has ample time to practice and plan Primer Tournaments.  Speaking of Adepticon...........

The Great Terrain Debate: The FSA Meta Big 3!

Greetings all!  SeerK here to talk terrain.  That is Terrain for Firestorm Armada.  I might even mention terrain in some of the other games I play for reference, but I am mainly going to be discussing the current meta of Terrain in Firestorm Armada.  As it stands there are 3 distinct terrain metas out there.  The Canadian Meta, The European Meta and the Lansing Meta.  I wanted to touch on all three and give a breakdown of what makes them unique.  I may not fully understand all of the nuances of the Meta's I have not played in, but I wanted to give my opinion on them and maybe offer a different outside perspective on them.

Adepticon is right around the corner and the web cart goes live on November 23rd.  The Schaumburg Prime Offensive returns this year.  We have 32 initial spots with room for more if the demand is like it was last year.  I wanted to really be preemptive and plan better this year.  I also wanted players to be in the loop so they are fully briefed and battle ready for the tournament.   So here we go, the "Big 3" FSA Meta's.

The 2nd Schaumburg Prime Offensive: The Road to Adepticon 2016

Greetings all!  The time has come to plan for Adepticon 2016!  The WayGate team is hard at work planning the 2nd Schaumburg Prime Offensive at Adepticon.  Missions are already mostly developed as is a new method of doing terrain.

We plan on being bigger and better this year and expanding the offering of events.  We have a learn to play Firestorm Armada class as well as the big show The Schaumburg Prime Offensive.  I am working on a format as well as logistics for a Planetfall Tournament as well if there is interest in the community for a Planetfall event.

I have a little Survey up at The WayGate Facebook Page that I would like to ask people to take a couple minutes and vote on.  We want to run an event that is professional and reflects the will of the community.  So we want to see what point level people would like to play at.  800, 900 or 1000 points?

Go Vote!

I apologize for the lack of updates.  The trusty laptop finally died and I am forced to try and work on posts at work.  I will be more vigilant in the coming weeks.  I have a bunch of events to plan for the Store as well as getting all my stuff together to run Firestorm Armada and Halo Fleet Battle Demos at U-CON in Ann Arbor.  Come check it out and say hi if you are in the area!

Michigan GT Results!

Greetings all.  I apologize for the lateness of the update.  The trusty laptop decided to kick the bucket and I have been in a scramble to try and get things replaced and retrieved from it.  Thank goodness I can do this at work!  The Michigan GT has passed by us now.  It was a great weekend with new attendance records being set.  This was the first year for Firestorm Armada and sadly attendance was not where I wanted it.

Despite the low number of players we still put on our events with the same energy as we do at Adepticon.  We ran a 1200 point tournament on Saturday and our 800 point tournament on Sunday ended up turning into a 4 on 4 Zenian vs Kurak narrative battle.  Myself, Spellduckwrong and Dreadbeard all stepped in to play.

I would like to congratulate our winners.  Micheal Lietzke aka "Ryjak" on the Spartan community forums was our Grand Admiral in Saturday's Alpha Sector Clash 1200 point tournament.  Austin Proux aka "DemoMaster" on the Spartan Community forum was our Narrative event Winner on Sunday's Alpha Sector Incursion.

I would like to thank the players who came and showed their support for Firestorm Armada at the Michigan GT.  I would also like to thank the organizers for all their hard work in making and growing this convention in the heart of Michigan.  Look for a return of Firestorm next year and bigger and better things from the Michigan GT.

The Waygate Team is now setting its sights on Adepticon.  Planning has begun and Events have been submitted!  We will be growing this year and bringing you a bigger Schaumburg Prime Offensive.  We are working on some things for the future as well, so stay tuned.

Once i have my technical issues figured out, I will be posting much more regularly.  I am now a contributor to Bell Of Lost Souls, so keep your eyes peeled for articles on BOLS from your truly.

Until Next time

Halo Fleet Battles: SeerK's First Look

Greeting all!  SeerK here once again.  In this installment I am going to be looking at Spartan Games latest endeavor, Halo Fleet Battles.  It came as a surprise to many Spartan Games fans that they had teamed up with Studio 343 and Microsoft in making a game based on Halo.  This is the first IP licensed to Spartan Games and it is a biggy.  If there is one thing Spartan knows how to do very well, it's how to make a damn fun space ship game.  The first game using the new Halo IP is Halo Fleet Battles.  We have UNSC and Covenant space fleets battling it out in the depths of space.  Lets take a look.

The game engine for Halo Fleet Battles is completely new, but it borrows some game mechanics from other Spartan games.  The most notable difference though, compared to their other games, is that the game does not really use D6's.  You have a pile of "Halo Dice" which have hits misses and failures denoted by symbols on a 6 sided die.  The Spartan hallmark, The exploding dice Mechanic, is present, but not in its traditional form.  It is also limited.  No single frigates taking out Battleships in this game.  Another notable difference is that the ships are based differently.  We have car overlays with the ships stats on the bases and in the case of smaller ships, multiple ships on one base.

The game is divided into five phases

1.  Order Dice Phase
2. Wing Phase
3.  Battle Group Phase
4.  Boarding resolution Phase
5.  End Phase

You have a commander that you buy as part of your fleet.  From my understanding there will be more characters you can purchase as time goes on.  The first Commander pack is up for sale on Spartans website and a couple of the FLGS's in the area have them on their shelves.  The Commander and special characters allow you to do special attacks and actions via the Order Dice.  You roll the 5 order dice to start the turn off.  You arrange the dice on the commanders card and depending on what symbols you roll, it opens up options for special orders and actions.  If you roll any command Icons you can add these to your initiative roll.  Once you determine who gets the first activation, you proceed from the Order Dice Phase to the Wing Phase.

Much Like Firestorm Armada, Halo has alternating activations.  Unlike Firestorm Armada though, Halo has an entire phase dedicated to wings.  Bombers, boarding craft and the like all move and perform their actions independently of their parent ships.  Wings start on the table.  They move and engage each other and bigger ships.  They are represented by card stock tokens rather that resin SRS tokens.  I am still learning the game personally and it is recommended you skip the wings phase and using wings when you are first starting out as it would seem a lot of the complex interactions take place in this phase.  Interceptors and such block bombers and boarding craft rather than destroy them.  It would seem you can lock them up indefinitely if you so choose.  The wings phase is also how you deliver your boarding troops.  This is important for the UNSC as this is how you can really hurt Covenant ships.  Despite the numeric advantage the UNSC has a tough time dealing with Covenant vessels.

The Battle Group Phase is next.  This is where you move your Battle Groups.  Ships and Squadrons of ships that share a base are referred to as Elements.  Several Elements make up a Battle Group.  Several Battle Groups make up your fleet.  Every Element has a build rating.  When you are building your force it will have a point cap and each Battle Group cannot exceed 6 Build points.  A big heavy cruiser may have a build rating of 5, while a frigate squadron may have a build rating of 1.  Elements in a battle group move as a squadron would in Firestorm Armada.  You move your vessels, fire your weapons and then your opponent goes.  You go back and fourth until all the battle groups have activated.  I will go more in depth into the Battle group Phase and game play in general in our next installment.

The boarding resolution phase is next.  You resolve all the boarding actions you started in the wings phase.  This allows you to send Spartans and Zealots to your opponents ships in an effort to cripple or destroy them.  This is a hazardous endeavor though and usually results in the loss of the boarding troops if the vessel is destroyed.  There is a slim chance of survival though.

In the end phase you resolve all the miscellaneous tokens and statuses that your elements have acquired over the course of the turn. It is pretty standard fair for most war gamers.  I am still learning the game.  I think there was a misconception made by many gamers, that is that Halo would be something that was similar in nature to X-Wing.

That is not the case.  It is a full blown miniature war game that has a lot of depth and nuance.  It draws from Spartans other creations, but stands by itself as a new game engine.  It borrows elements for Firestorm Armada, its damage system from Firestorm Planetfall and its feel from Halo itself.

So far I like it.  next time we will go more in depth into the system and how it works.  We will also be continuing our look at the Relthoza in Planetfall.  I will have some reports form the front next weekend.  The Michigan GT is a week away and I will be there Running two Firestorm Armada tournaments as well as Playing in an INfinity ITS tournament.

Diving Into Infinity

Greetings!  So I have to say it has been quite an eventful summer.  The fall is closing in on us in Michigan and I find myself as busy as ever.  You see when the weather starts to get colder and the snow starts falling, we Michiganders start to do a lot more stuff indoors.  I think this is why war gaming and gaming in general is real big in the midwest area.  I predominately play Firestorm Armada and Planetfall, but I have been starting to play some other games.  As most of you know I dabble in Malifaux and War Machine.  We have a healthy WarmaHordes community in Michigan and at the Game store I work at.  Malifaux sadly not so much.  I am trying to change that.  I have started a bunch of Fall Escalation Leagues for several games.  The aforementioned games all have a League going and thankfully we have a people participating in all of them.  Some have more players than others.  The game that has the most Participants by a wide margin is a new game to the area.  I was introduced at Adepticon this past year and then Immersed at Gencon.

Greetings all! SeerK here once again to talk Firestorm. We will be continuing to talk about the Relthoza in Firestorm Planetfall. Last time we discussed the Core Helix. In this installment we will be talking about the Heavy Helix and Firepower Leviathan Helix. These heavy hitters help the army out in the offensive firepower department and in the case of the Leviathan an anchor for your drone swarms.

Life After Gencon: SeerK's Report

SeerK Working the Spartan Booth
Greetings all!  Holy crap what a weekend.  If you are just tuning in I am referring to my really fun and exhausting weekend at Gencon.  I was there Wednesday to Sunday and had the privilege of working at the Wyrd Miniatures booth as well as being part of Spartan Games first convention stateside.  This was, I have to say, a really great experience and I am very happy to have finally met Neil and Frances Fawcett.  That's right guys and gals, I got to work with the head honchos of our favorite game company.

I also had the privilege of working with Martin and Chris aka "Crispy" , the Production Manager and Designer responsible for a big portion of the Firestorm line respectively.  They were running the eager fans through demos of Halo Fleet battles...which sold out completely in 2 days.  I worked the Wyrd Miniatures booth on Friday, literally all day, helping people find products and running Malifaux demos.  It was awesome seeing Mason, Aaron and Kelly again.  I worked with them at Origins this past year as well.

Convention Update!: Gencon 2015

Greetings and salutations! SeerK here once again.  Its has been a slow month on the blog. and this is mostly because I have been going full tilt at the new job.  I have been painting mini's, making terrain and constructing tables.  If you have not heard, SeerK is now working at a game store.  B.C. Comix in Battle Creek Michigan to be exact. I have also been getting ready to go to Gencon.  I have been drafted by Wyrd and Spartan to do demos at Gencon 2015.  I have to say I am pretty excited. This is my first trip to Gencon.  I know what you are saying.  "SeerK...seriously....you have never been to Gencon?!?!"  This is indeed true.  In my 20+ years as a gamer I have never been, despite my proximity to the convention.

I decided that this year I was going to change that.  I have been to Adepticon for many years and attended Origins Game Fair this year, so I decided its about time I did Gencon too.  I will be running Malifaux demos for Wyrd once again.  Come see me for a game at the Wyrd Games booth.  I will also be running demos for Spartan Games.  Come see me Saturday of the convention for an intro to one of Spartans awesome games, or just come and say Hi!

I will be continuing my series on the Relthoza after Gencon.  I plan on doing at least one "almost live" post while I am at the convention.  I will be rooming with Tim Toolen aka "Miniature Tim" of the Miniature Tim Blog during the convention. so look for updates and plenty of pictures from both of us.  Firestorm Armada, Halo Fleet Battles, Malifaux and Infinity will be had.

Its going to be a busy week for me so stay tuned for updates later this week! I would also like to remind all the Firestorm fans that we still have spots left in the Firestorm Armada tournaments and Narrative events at the 2015 Michigan GT in our backyard of Lansing, MI. Sign up today as spots may fill up quick.  There are some locals being slackers and have not signed up yet.  Reserve your spot now!

Teach A Man To FIsh.....Building A Better Game Community

I have had a lot on my mind as of late.  I started a new job at a growing game store in Battle Creek Michigan.  One of the main things that I was hired for was to help build the war games community at the store and in the area in general.  I started doing what I normally do and started talking to all the players that played regularly in the store.  I wanted to gauge where the community stood at that particular moment in time.  As I talked to people, I started to really think about how I would build the community.  I looked at the thriving community that had built up in Lansing and tried to break down exactly what things were in place that made the community grow to the level that it was at.  To build a good community you need time and patience and there are a few other key things you need to make it happen.

Spiders Everywhere! The Relthoza In Planetfall

Greetings all! SeerK here to talk Spiders.  I have had quite a few games with the Relthoza in Firestorm Planetfall now.  I wanted to start going in depth about the units and tactics with the army so far  I think the best way to do this is to go Helix by Helix and give a break down of the units.  I wanted to get a little ahead of the podcast so to speak.  We have covered the Dindrenzi and RSN in Firestorm Armada and we completed recording of our Terran Episode this past weekend.  We had a special Guest on to help us out.  Alex Mann of Mann's Model Moments lent his expertise.  You guys may also know him as Spartan Alex.  Lets delve into the Faction that has become near and dear to my heart. The Relthoza.

Firestorm System Wars Is Here

Just a quick update.  Origins was awesome and I am finally recovered from the week of working and gaming.  I am hard at work on some articles about the Relthoza and about my two new gaming vices, Malifaux and Infinity.

The big news though is from Spartan Games.  July 20th we will be getting Halo System Wars.  The 2 player starter box ships on the 20th.  I for one am looking forward to my shop getting this in so I can tear into it and see how the game runs.  The multi tier difficulty system they have developed for the game has me curious.

Also landing next month is the Planetary Invasion fleets for the 6 major races in Firestorm Armada.  Included in this box set is the phase one rules for Firestorm: System Wars.  The rules for integration of Armada and Planetfall are finally here and I am excited.  The invasion ships look awesome and from what I am told my Spiders are the best at landing troops.  What is real exciting though is this is only phase one.  I am hoping phase 2 involves Spec Ops.  I think the whole reason I am starting into Infinity is because I am finding myself in dire need of a sci fi 28 mm scale game that is not 40k.  Its even better that it is skirmish.  Spec Ops is really what I am waiting for.  It looks like we are one step closer.

Thats all for now.  Stay tuned to Firebase Delta. In the latest episode we have a very special guest.  I will also be posting a break down of the Relthoza on the ground in the coming weeks.

Greetings all.  SeerK here.  Today I wanted to talk about a game that I have recently been learning.  Tj over at Dark Future Games  has been talking about his journey into Infinity, I am starting to get into that as well, so I thought I should post about my journey into the world of Malifaux.  I was approached by 40kOrigins to help out at Origins Game Fair June 3rd-7th.  They are running all the 40K, Necromunda and BFG tournaments as well as running demos of Mercs, Drop Zone Commander, Rivet Wars and Malifaux.

I personally will be Running Malifaux Demos Wednesday and Thursday.  I am not running and Spartan Games stuff, but I will have my Firestorm Armada fleets and Firestorm Planetfall army with me if anybody is interested in a game or 5.  Next year me thinks there will be some Firestorm Armada though.

SO lets take a look at Malifaux.  I am new to the game so please excuse me if I make any errors.  So far I have been enjoying it.

The Invasion Begins! New Fleet Boxes!

So if you have been on Facebook or the forums you have probably seen the new Fleet boxes containing the Invasion ships needed to take a planet and deliver your Planetfall Armies.  You haven't? well here you go....

The Fleet Boxes contain an Assault Carrier, Assault Cruisers and Frigates of a new class.  The Box also contains details about 6 Fleet Commanders.  Thats right everybody we now have special characters!  Probably more exciting is what else is contained in the booklet in the box.  Firestorm System Wars rules and Scenarios.  Now we just need some more Helixs and Spec ops to hit!  Speaking of Planetfall, Have you seen the RSN Helix and the Veydreth?

The allied Race helixs will now all be out and we have Recon Helixs this month.  What a Lovely Day!

Remember The Fallen

SeerK here. I wanted to take a moment and say a little something today.  Today is Memorial Day.  Today we remember those who have fallen in the line of duty serving our country.  Today I remember those in my family who have passed beyond the veil.  My Grandfather Alfred Linde, who served in the Army Core of Engineers in WW2 and My Grandfather Raymond Sell who served and a Ball Gunner on a B-17 in Europe.  He was shot down and survived two year in a prison camp.  I remember them for their service and the Legacy they left behind.

While you are enjoying the long weekend and the BBQ's remember the fallen.

Conventions!

SeerK here once again.  I am here to give a little update on what we are doing event wise over the next few months.  As you may have noticed we have a Michigan GT logo up on the page.  The WayGate crew , myself, Dreadbeard and Spellduckwrong, will be running some events at the 2015 Michigan GT September 25th-27th.  We are very excited to be running Firestorm in our home town of Lansing Michigan.

The Michigan GT started out as a large 40K grand tournament.  They will be running the GT per normal as well as several other 40K events.  Warmachine and Hordes will also be represented.  In fact there will be a Masters tournament.  We will be running two Firestorm Armada tournaments.  We are planning an 800 point tournament and a 1200 point tournament.  Dreadbeard has also had a very cool concept which we are developing for a fun Narrative event which we will be running on the day we are not running tournaments.  It should be a very fun weekend.  Reserve the time off and watch out for pre registration to open next month.  register early as we will have limited space.  Click on the Michigan GT banner to the right for details and stay tuned to the blog for details as they develop.

If you are going to Origins Game fair  June 3rd-7th in Columbus Ohio stop by the miniature area to say hi.  I will be there with 40kOrigins running games and seeing what the convention is all about.  I will be running Malifaux on Wednesday and Thursday.  The group is running 40k tournaments, Drop Zone Commander, Necromunda, Battle Fleet Gothic, Ogre, Mercs and a few others.  I of course will have all my Firestorm Armada and Firestorm Planetfall stuff on hand if anybody wants to get a game in or learn.  I am not there Representing Spartan Games as a Vanguard officially this year, but a good Vanguard never rests.  Next year is in the works though.

I may also be at Gencon working at the Spartan Games booth, as long as they get back to me.  I may still head down at least for a day or two to mingle and say hi.  I will bring my fleets as I do believe a couple of the Spartan Community members were going to try and do an impromptu get together.

That's all for now.  Register for the GT soon and keep your eyes here for details.  Also come say hi at the 40kOrigins area and try out some games run by yours truly.  After my shifts are done I am always available to blow your fleets out of the stars.

Until next time......

Planetfall Terrain! A Closer Look

A typical table at the FLGS
SeerK here once again.  I had a request from Spartan Community Forum member Ryjak, to talk about terrain in Planetfall. That is terrain interaction and some examples of the terrain coverage on the tables when our group is playing.  Terrain has been one of the big concerns for Planetfall. with everybody learning the system and feeling out the game it has been hard to gauge how much terrain is appropriate.

There has been quite a bit of debate and opinions given on the forums and on the Facebook groups.  The group at Evolution Games in Lansing, my group, has been playing with about 55%-65% table coverage.  We have found this to be an appropriate amount of coverage.  Some groups have been playing with less though. We had thought terrain was going to have an affect on game length and it does to a point.  After I got some confirmation from Spartan Alex that games should average about 3 turns, we realized we weren't playing wrong and the game really is that brutal.

Mount Up! Recon and Infantry Helix's Spotted!

In the wake of the Leviathan Firepower Helix release and the ORBATs dropping with the rest of the Leviathan rules,  as well as major changes to points and units in said ORBATS, Some photos of our next two helix releases have dropped.  The Recon Helix's and the long awaited Infantry upgrades.

Lets look at some Infantry first!

and Now the recon Helix's.  I am curious about the medium Spiders in this one.  Are we getting some more mobile Drone Nexus? Or are we getting a Drone Factory?

Aquan Recon Helix

Dindrenzi Recon Helix

Sorylian Recon Helix

Relthoza Recon Helix

Terran Recon Helix

Directorate Recon Helix

Well these all look pretty nice.. I know those of you with living infantry have been looking forward to the upgrades for your infantry.  I am really looking forward to a Helix still in development.  The Breacher Helix has a new element in it that adds a new dimension to the game and will be almost as big as a regular core helix.  The ability to destroy buildings and Objectives will add some new tactical depth to the game and make an army geared completely to wipe out the opposing force very viable.  Why take objectives when you can deny your enemy the points.
